Successful Line and Brand Extensions

Tide

 

Proctor and Gamble's Tide laundry detergent, began testing in 1946 and was launched nationwide in the USA in 1949. It's orignal form was a white powdered bead and remained this way until 1984 when the line was entended to include a liquid form. Today in 2015, tide has successfully launched and sustained 24 differnt detergents under the same brand name.  

Tostitos

 

Tostitos, a division of Frito Lay, is a brand that focuses on tortilla chips as oppose to potato chips like most of the other brands under Frito Lay. Originally releasing a single round corn chip in 1978, they have since come out with 17 different varieties rangng from their artesian recipes line to organics to cantina style to scoops. But perhaps their most impressive line extension was the decision to launch a varitety of dips and salsa's to be used with their chips. This is a perfect example of a wise line extension because you use one product with the other. If they only sold tortilla chips their consumers would be purchasing salsas and dips from other companies. Why not go after that market as well?
